"I believe that baking isn’t just a hobby — it’s connection, storytelling, and the art of experimenting. Every cake, every loaf, and every crumble carries a unique story forward."

My Story

Sometimes life has a way of leading us exactly where we're meant to be.

After spending 27 years working in telecommunications, I suddenly found myself without a job. Not long after, I sold my house and moved back home to Wolfe Island, Ontario—the place where I grew up. As I looked at a job market that had changed so much over the years, I realized that perhaps it wasn't just that my experience no longer seemed to fit. Deep down, I knew I was ready to leave corporate life behind and embrace something different.

With my children grown and building lives of their own, I finally had time to return to the things that brought me joy. I rediscovered old hobbies, learned new ones like quilt making, and found myself surrounded by the kind of community that makes Wolfe Island so special. Generations of farming families and newcomers alike share a warmth, kindness, and "get-it-done" spirit that has always defined island life. Living here means appreciating homemade things and taking pride in making them well.

My love of baking began long before I ever imagined owning a business. One of my earliest memories is standing beside my grandmother in her home kitchen when I was about eight years old. My young arms were strong enough to stir the thirty pounds of fruit and spice that would become her famous Christmas plum pudding. Through the years, baking became my way of showing love. When money was tight, homemade Christmas treats became gifts. Later, while raising my children, gourmet sweets made heartfelt presents that meant more than anything I could buy.

In 2025, I was fortunate to reconnect with a former childhood neighbour who had spent forty years making a living creating homemade sweets. Working alongside him for a year, we shared knowledge, stories, and plenty of laughter. We taught each other a great deal.

Then, in the spring of 2026, something wonderful happened. The sweets I had been making for local gatherings began attracting attention. People started asking for my Sufganiyot, apple fritters, cinnamon rolls, and sweet rolls. Word spread. Orders grew. Before long, I found myself making custom cakes and special desserts for friends, neighbours, and customers who quickly became friends.

Today, as an early-retired and happily "re-wired" woman in my late fifties, I can honestly say I have never been happier with the work I do. Every batch is made with care, every recipe carries a little history, and every customer is appreciated.

Barry Sweet Pastries was born from a lifetime of baking, a return to home, and the belief that the sweetest things in life are often made by hand and shared with others.
